TOP 5 BENEFITS OF A COLD PLUNGE

You don’t have to be a professional athlete to be able to enjoy and reap the benefits of cold plunging. Technically known as cryotherapy, this form of hydrotherapy has been practiced since ancient times and is beneficial for many! The goal of the therapy is to remove heat from the body, resulting in lowering core and tissue temps and additionally to alter blood flow. There are many reactions and positive results to these actions. Here are 5 reasons to give it a try!

1. Heal sore muscles & reduce muscular pain

The theory is that by the cold water will initially stress the body restricting blood flow, so the body reacts by working harder to force increased blood flow throughout the body. This results in oxygen and nutrients being more readily supplied to areas that need healing, therefore speeding up the restoration process.

2. Enhance your mood

During the body’s exposure to the cold, it is said to trigger a response from neurotransmitters that are tied to stress or depression.  Chemicals such as dopamine are released. After the stress of the cold plunge is over, the body can enter a period of calm and satisfaction and even euphoria from the sudden rush of endorphins that are released.

3. Reduce inflammation

Since the cold will initially constrict circulation, inflammation and pain can be decreased during this phase. For post-work out immersions, the cold can help reduce lactic acid buildup by making the blood vessels smaller. The increase in circulation after the plunge is when the body sends more blood to the areas that were restricted, initiating restoration to joints and inflamed areas.

4. Improve the immune system

The immune system responds to the triggers sent out when the body is put into the cold condition. Among other responses, it is said that the cold triggers production of white blood cells, which ultimately fight infection and illness.

5. Increase metabolism & potentially lose weight

Some experts have reported that even metabolism can be boosted through cold plunging. The body tries to generate more heat by increasing metabolism during the plunge! Also, the reduced core temperature causes the body to convert white fat cells to brown fat cells, burning fat in the process.
