HONOR MOTHER NATURE BY CHOOSING A SMALL POOL

For over ten years, we’ve been educating people about the benefits of installing plunge pools, including the environmental ones. We talk often about the obvious advantages; less energy to operate the pool, less fuel to heat the pool, and almost no/very few chemicals required in a salt water system.

Water conservation is also a major advantage when installing a plunge pool. A 7’x13’ pool uses approximately 80% less water than a traditional large in-ground pool (i.e. 20’x40’). When you multiply the water NOT being consumed across thousands of pools, the impact is massive. Also factor in that most plunge pools are used year-round. This means the pool isn’t being drained and refilled twice a year, resulting in even more water conservation.

There’s one big benefit that doesn’t get talked about enough—and honestly, it might be the most important one. When you install a small pool, you’re only disturbing a tiny bit of the earth. That’s a huge deal! Compared to the major digging and disruption that comes with a large pool, the difference is massive.

Real-World Comparison: Small Pool vs. Large Pool Footprint

Here’s an example based on a 7’x13’ pool with an 11’x17’ footprint (to accommodate backfill area and coping around the pool). This pool would require the homeowner to disturb approximately 187 square feet. Now compare that to a 20'x40' pool with a 10-foot deck all the way around—it ends up disturbing about 2,400 square feet of land. That’s roughly 13 times more than a small plunge pool!

Across the country, there are thousands and thousands of acres that could be left in their natural state if homeowners choose a small footprint pool. This is a powerful and clear way to show respect for Mother Nature by preserving more green space that helps produce oxygen, absorb water, and even reduce stormwater runoff, just to name a few benefits. Plus, a backyard with thoughtful plantings and grass around a body of water is not only better for the environment, but it also creates a much more peaceful and beautiful space to relax.

Plunge Pools: The Sustainable Choice for Modern Backyards

When we think about our responsibility to be good stewards of the earth but also our desire to create backyard living areas, there is no disputing the clear choice for beauty and sustainability in backyard swimming pools is a plunge pool. From less energy and fuel consumption to leaving so much more green space around the area, size is a huge factor and something to consider when renovating any back yard.
